Dr. Dean Mckay co-editing upcoming book

Recent President-elect of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT)Dr. Dean McKay and colleague, Eric Storch (of University of South Florida), are in the process of co-editing a forthcoming volume that will be published by the American Psychological Association. The book, Obsessive compulsive disorder and its spectrum across the lifespan, is timely by addressing contemporary treatment issues in the forthcoming new DSM-5 category of Obsessive Compulsive Related Disorders.  

Dr. McKay’s research lab, Compulsive, Obsessive, and Anxiety Program , continues to be active in the professional psychology arena.  Some of the lab's recent accomplishments include program graduate Nate Thomas’s recent publication in the American Journal of Psychiatry, entitled, “A quality-based review of randomized controlled trials of cognitive-behavioral therapy for depressions: An assessment and meta-regression.”  Many current lab members will be presenting posters at the upcoming ABCT conference and have also published papers in peer-reviewed journals with Dr. McKay.  

Dr. Wallace awarded Carolyn Payton Early Career Award

Fordham alumnus, Dr. Scyatta A. Wallace, was recently honored with the Carolyn Payton Early Career Award from APA. Dr. Wallace received her PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology in 2002 from Fordham University, where she specialized in child and adolescent health. Upon graduation, she completed a research fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, GA where she worked on domestic and international HIV/AIDS programs. Dr. Wallace’s current research focuses on the influence of neighborhood context and sociocultural norms on HIV risk among urban Black youth.  Her work also includes the design and implementation of gender specific and culturally-tailored interventions to promote health and health care utilization among Black youth.   In addition, she is interested in the promotion of community consultation as a tool for addressing ethical concerns in behavioral and mental health research with vulnerable populations.  Dr. Wallace is currently a professor of Psychology at St. John’s University in Queens, NY.  The Fordham psychology department is proud to congratulate Dr. Wallace on her accomplishments!

2012 Anastasi Lecture Series set for October 23rd

The upcoming 2012 Anastasi Lecture Series talk is entitled, "The More Who Die, the Less We Care: The Arithmetic of Compassion." Paul Slovic, Ph.D., the founder and president of Decision Research, has been invited to address the Fordham community on this intriguing topic. The focus of his will be on why good people and their governments have repeatedly ignored mass murder and genocide. Dr. Slovic is a former president of the Society for Risk Analysis and has received a number of prestigious awards for his work in human judgment, decision making and risk analysis.

Dr. Jopp's Centenarian Research Gains Media Attention

Dr. Daniela Jopp spearheads the Fordham Centenarian Study.  The research program investigates the specifics of life at age 100 - how well are centenarians doing, what are the difficulties that they face in everyday life, activities they like to engage in, and how satisfied are they with their lives.  A central aim of the research is investigating psychological factors that enable these very old individuals to handle everyday challenges in a positive way.

Dr. Jopp and the Fordham Centenarian Study have been featured recently on Web MD.  Jopp was quoted about her recent research findings, stating, "We Know personality has a strong genetic background...[Those who live to 100] seem to have a very special psychological makeup."  Read the full article on WebMD.

Professor McKay elected President of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies

The membership voting for board members of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) has recently concluded, and Professor Dean McKay has been elected President of the organization.  Dr. McKay currently serves on the board of ABCT as Representative-at-Large (Convention and Education Issues), and will transition to be President-elect at the conference meeting in November.  Dr. McKay will serve as President for the 2013-2014 year.  Dr. McKay will continue to serve on the board as past-President for the 2014-2015 year.

ABCT is recognized internationally as the leading organization that covers the scientific foundations and practice of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT).  Among empirically supported psychological treatments, the vast majority is CBT in nature, and virtually all have been developed by active members of ABCT.  The organization has a membership of 2200 Full and New Professional members in the US, and over 3500 worldwide.  When graduate students are included, the membership is over 5500 individuals.  In addition to the annual convention, where the leaders in the field of clinical psychology gather to disseminate their research and promote the training of colleagues via workshops, the organization is closely involved in the planning of the triennial World Congress of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (meeting next in 2013 in Lima, Peru; http://www.wcbct2013.pe/site/).

Clinical Program Celebrates Dr. Rosenfeld

Dr. Barry Rosenfeld will be stepping down as Director of Clinical Training for the Clinical Graduate Program after his 6 year tenure in the position.  He has done much to enhance the program during the past 6 years, and was celebrated for his accomplishments and unique style as DCT with students and faculty of the clinical program.  Dr. Monica Rivera-Mindt will take over as DCT this summer.

Rorschach Workshop at Fordham: June 14 & 15

The Fordham Psychology Department is excited to present a new ongoing workshop series, and pleased to announce the first workshop in the series:

The Rorschach Performance Assessment System (R-PAS): Introduction and Case Illustration

This two-day workshop is designed to prepare professionals and graduate students to start using the new R-PAS system which is a new, evidence-focused Rorschach system. Learn more about the R-PAS system at www.r-pas.org

The workshop will be conducted by Gregory J. Meyer, Ph.D. and Donald Viglione, Ph.D., both renowned experts in personality assessment, who will discuss the empirical background for R-PAS, clinical utility, including procedures for administration, and conclude with practical application with clinical cases.  This workshop qualifies for Continuing Education Credit.
