Recent Clinical doctoral program graduate Nate Thoma has had the manuscript that resulted from his dissertation accepted for publication in American Journal of Psychiatry:

Fordham Symposium Oct 31: Graduate School in Psychology

The 31st Annual Fordham Symposium was held Monday, October 31st at Lincoln Center, Room 1004 from 5:45pm-7pm.

The Symposium topic was Graduate School in Psychology. How can students best prepare for competitive graduate schools and careers while still in college? Students heard experts briefly present answers to different aspects of this important question. A series of 8-minute presentations was followed by individual consultation with the speakers.

This 31st Fordham Symposium on Graduate School in Psychology was hosted by the Fordham LC psychology faculty, Psychology Association and Psi Chi.

The Department introduces the Great Speakers in Science lecture series

The Psychology Department is excited to introduce Great Speakers in Science lecture series. Great Speakers in Science is a new initative to bring renowned professionals in the field of psychology involved in cutting edge research and boasting impressive backgrounds to speak at Fordham University.

The inaugural Great Speakers in Science lecture is proud to present Kathy Haaland, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology and Vice Chair for Research at New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care Systems.

Dr. Haaland is a true leader in the field of clinical neuropsychology. She has authored over 100 publications, is Editor of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, and has been continuously funded for the last 25 years. Since 2004, she has been the recipient of a 1.4 million dollar award (the VA Research Career Scientist), which allows her to devote 50% of her time to research collaborations. Recently, she has become interested in the cognitive correlates of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury, which is funded through a grant from the Department of Defense. She will discuss her recent work in neurocognitive functioning in PTSD.

Research Colloquium: October 19th

October Research Colloquium took place on Wednesday, October 19th. The invited speaker was Adam Brickman, Ph.D., an Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology from the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Brickman presented: Not all that matters is grey: The importance of white matter in cognitive aging and dementia.

The Fordham Council of Applied Psychometrics (FCAP) presented Andrew Rasmussen, Ph.D., as the next speaker in the FCAP Lecture Series. Dr. Rasmussen is an Assistant Professor at NYU Medical Center and known for his work as the Research Director of the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture. He presented on the topic of "Social Networks & Health Among Refugees in New York City."

FCAP Conference: July 27-29, 2011

The Fordham Council on Applied Psychometrics (FCAP) is a consortium of graduate students and faculty whose focus is on expanding the awareness and responsible use of psychometric applications in psychology, education and beyond. FCAP’s first conference, held in 2008, was a resounding success. It attracted over 100 professionals and graduate students to explore the themes of the expanding field of psychometrics and the need for appropriate training and expertise. We are currently in the process of planning our second conference, to take place from July 27-29, 2011 at the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University. This year’s theme will be an exploration of Howard Wainer’s (2008) article “Fourteen Conversations About Three Things” published in the Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics. Our intent is to offer both professionals and graduate students in psychometrics an opportunity to learn from preeminent scholars in the field and to exhibit their own research. We are pleased to be able to offer presentations by a number of distinguished members of the psychometrics community. The first day will consist of workshops given by Matthew Johnson, David Rindskopf, Bobby Naemi and Jeremy Burrus, and Alina von Davier. The remaining two days will feature keynote speeches by Howard Wainer, Henry Braun, Jimmy de la Torre, and Patrick Shrout, as well as paper and poster presentations.

News from Dr. McKay’s Lab

Notification of acceptances has been issued for submissions for the annual meeting of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the leading organization devoted to the development and dissemination of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). This year, Dr. McKay and his group of graduate students were highly productive, with a total of 10 presentations accepted for the next meeting, in November in Toronto, Ontario. Learn more about the upcoming conference. Here is a summary of the presentations:

Symposia: Members of the lab will either co-chair or participate in symposia. Brian Pilecki organized a symposium that will address the theory-practice gap in CBT, and will co-chair the session with Dr. McKay. The panel includes leaders in theory and practice, namely Dr. Jon Abramowitz (of UNC-Chapel Hill), Dr. Keith Dobson (of University of Calgary) and Dr. Steven Hayes (of University of Nevada-Reno). Elliot Weiner organized and will co-chair with Dr. McKay a session to address new and novel approaches to conducting exposure therapy. The paper from the lab is based on experimental research investigating methods of reducing chronic depersonalization, which is a perceptual disturbance associated with several extreme anxiety states such as panic and posttraumatic stress. Other presenters in the panel include Dr. Brett Deacon (University of Wyoming), Dr. Jon Abramowitz (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Michelle Gryczkowski (Mayo Clinic). Finally, Justin Arocho will present (in a paper co-authored with lab members Joseph Brand and Elliot Weiner) that examines the newly developed moral disgust scale and its association with indices of posttraumatic stress. This paper was invited for a symposium chaired by Danielle Maack of University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Posters: The lab has been pursuing research investigating the relations among numerous anxiety assessments, leading to poster presentations in several interrelated domains. One of these, an examination of “Not Just Right Experiences” (NJRE) in relation to obsessive-compulsive symptoms and beliefs was accepted for presentation, and authored by lab members Joseph Brand, Jeannette Reid, and Justin Arocho. NJRE are commonly reported perceptual disturbances commonly experienced among individuals suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The lab is actively investigating additional factors associated with NJRE, and this research is an early investigation. The lab had two papers accepted that evaluate factors involved in anxiety sensitivity and its relation to both posttraumatic stress conditions and health anxiety. These papers were authored by lab members Elliot Weiner and Joseph Brand.

Panels and Workshops: Dr. McKay will be presenting a workshop (in the organization’s Master Clinician Series) with Stephen Whiteside (of Mayo Clinic). The workshop will train attendees in methods of conducting CBT with children with OCD. Finally, Dr. McKay was invited to participate in a panel aimed to describe methods of exposure therapy. Other panelists are Mitchell Schare (of Hofstra University) and Jon Abramowitz (UNC-Chapel Hill)

We are also planning on submitting additional research for the ‘Special Interest Group’ poster session, which is held on the Friday evening of the conference, and has a later deadline than the main conference.

Applied Developmental student wins award at the Association of Moral Education Conference

Congratulations to Amie Senland and her advisor Ann Higgins-D'Alessandro for winning the "Best Poster Award, Association for Moral Education", in recognition of exceptional contributions to moral education. The paper, based on Amie's ADP masters research was entitled "Moral reasoning and empathy in adolescents with higher-functioning autistic spectrum disorders: Implications for moral education."

Research Colloquium: April 13th

April's Research Colloquium took place on Wednesday, April 13th in Flom Auditorium located in Walsh Library.

Esther Calzada, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center presented. Dr. Calzada concentrates her research efforts on children's development within the family system from a cultural framework, with a specific priority to study acculturation within families. Dr. Calzada's presentation was titled Risk and Protective Factors among Latino Families of Young Children: Implications for Intervention.

Fordham Represents at the Annual Psychology and Law Conference in Miami!

Several Fordham graduate students and faculty were happy to leave the New York winter weather behind for Miami, to attend the American Psychology-Law Society’s (AP-LS) annual conference March 1 to 6th. AP-LS is the 41st division of the American Psychological Association.

Fordham’s forensic contingent was well-represented with seven first-author presentations and a cheerful presence at the conference social events:

Dr. Barry Rosenfeld gave a thought-provoking talk on the use (and misuse) of new feigning assessment instruments.

Dr. Keith Cruise presented a talk on the identification of PTSD in detained youth, and served as discussant for a session on high-risk girls and their transition to adulthood.

Fordham alumnus Dr. Debbie Greene and current graduate students Kate Pivovarova and Matt Stimmel also presented their findings on various methods for evaluating feigning, in a very well-attended session that had eager attendees standing in the aisles. Lively discussion ensued! Becky Weiss presented a talk on the utility of the SIRS (a measure of malingering) with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Mélodie Foellmi spoke about the challenges of screening psychiatric inpatients for further violence risk assessment. Lia Rohlehr, Jesse Barglow, and Spencer Cruz-Katz contributed to the presentations and were also in attendance at the conference.

Princeton Undergraduate Research Symposium

Undergraduate students have an opportunity to present their research at the annual Princeton Undergraduate Research Symposium that will be held May 4, 2011 at Princeton.

This is a great opportunity for undergraduates to showcase their research abilities and network with students and faculty from other universities and disciplines. Students can present research they've done during the year or over the summer. The symposium invites students from many different departments to present, including biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and social sciences. There is a poster competition judged by Princeton faculty and cash prizes are awarded. In addition, the keynote speaker is Harold Kroto, the 1996 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry.

March 17th Event: What is the Role of Public Education in Youth Civic Engagement?

The Graduate Center, City University of New York hosted Conversations on Child and Youth Development in the Everyday World on Thursday March 17, 2011 at the Graduate Center.

The specific topic addressed was "What is the Role of Public Education in Youth Civic Engagement?" Dr. Lonnie Sherrod, Executive Director, Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), and longtime Fordham faculty member and previous Director of the graduate Applied Developmental Program, was one of the featured panel speakers.

Research Colloquium: March 9th

March's Research Colloquium took place on Wednesday, March 9th at 11:30am in Flom Auditorium located in Walsh Library. The presenter was Alec Miller, Psy.D., Professor of Clinical and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Miller is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, and Associate Director, Psychology Internship Training Program. He also is the Director of Mental Health Services at PS 8 School-Health Program. He presented on Advances in Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Adolescents.
