Research Colloquium: April 13th

April's Research Colloquium took place on Wednesday, April 13th in Flom Auditorium located in Walsh Library.

Esther Calzada, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the NYU Child Study Center presented. Dr. Calzada concentrates her research efforts on children's development within the family system from a cultural framework, with a specific priority to study acculturation within families. Dr. Calzada's presentation was titled Risk and Protective Factors among Latino Families of Young Children: Implications for Intervention.

Fordham Represents at the Annual Psychology and Law Conference in Miami!

Several Fordham graduate students and faculty were happy to leave the New York winter weather behind for Miami, to attend the American Psychology-Law Society’s (AP-LS) annual conference March 1 to 6th. AP-LS is the 41st division of the American Psychological Association.

Fordham’s forensic contingent was well-represented with seven first-author presentations and a cheerful presence at the conference social events:

Dr. Barry Rosenfeld gave a thought-provoking talk on the use (and misuse) of new feigning assessment instruments.

Dr. Keith Cruise presented a talk on the identification of PTSD in detained youth, and served as discussant for a session on high-risk girls and their transition to adulthood.

Fordham alumnus Dr. Debbie Greene and current graduate students Kate Pivovarova and Matt Stimmel also presented their findings on various methods for evaluating feigning, in a very well-attended session that had eager attendees standing in the aisles. Lively discussion ensued! Becky Weiss presented a talk on the utility of the SIRS (a measure of malingering) with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Mélodie Foellmi spoke about the challenges of screening psychiatric inpatients for further violence risk assessment. Lia Rohlehr, Jesse Barglow, and Spencer Cruz-Katz contributed to the presentations and were also in attendance at the conference.

Keeping with the warm and beachy theme, next year’s conference will be in Puerto Rico! Students interested in submitting something should keep in mind that the deadline is usually around mid-September.

Princeton Undergraduate Research Symposium

Undergraduate students have an opportunity to present their research at the annual Princeton Undergraduate Research Symposium that will be held May 4, 2011 at Princeton.

This is a great opportunity for undergraduates to showcase their research abilities and network with students and faculty from other universities and disciplines. Students can present research they've done during the year or over the summer. The symposium invites students from many different departments to present, including biological sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and social sciences. There is a poster competition judged by Princeton faculty and cash prizes are awarded. In addition, the keynote speaker is Harold Kroto, the 1996 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry.

March 17th Event: What is the Role of Public Education in Youth Civic Engagement?

The Graduate Center, City University of New York hosted Conversations on Child and Youth Development in the Everyday World on Thursday March 17, 2011 at the Graduate Center.

The specific topic addressed was "What is the Role of Public Education in Youth Civic Engagement?" Dr. Lonnie Sherrod, Executive Director, Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), and longtime Fordham faculty member and previous Director of the graduate Applied Developmental Program, was one of the featured panel speakers.

Clinical Graduate Students and Faculty Present at the International Neuropsychological Society conference

Dr. Monica Rivera-Mindt and graduate students from her lab traveled to Boston, Massachusetts recently to present their important findings on a variety of topics at the 39th Annual Conference for the International Neuropsychological Society (INS)

Research Colloquium: March 9th

March's Research Colloquium took place on Wednesday, March 9th at 11:30am in Flom Auditorium located in Walsh Library. The presenter was Alec Miller, Psy.D., Professor of Clinical and Behavioral Sciences at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Miller is Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychology, Director of the Adolescent Depression and Suicide Program, and Associate Director, Psychology Internship Training Program. He also is the Director of Mental Health Services at PS 8 School-Health Program. He presented on Advances in Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Adolescents.

Upcoming New York City Psi Chi Conferences

Each year, Psi Chi and other psychology students are invited to submit their research for presentation at local NYC conferences. This year, the 39th Hunter Psychology Convention is April 10 and the 19th Pace Undergraduate Psychology Conference is on May 14. Fordham also hosts its own conference on April 27.
