News Update from Dr. McKay's C.O.A.P. Lab

Dr. Dean McKay's lab, Compulsive, Obsessive, and Anxiety Program, continues to be active in the professional psychology arena. Some of the lab's recent accomplishments are highlighted below. Check out more information from the C.O.A.P. lab.

Recent Clinical doctoral program graduate Nate Thoma has had the manuscript that resulted from his dissertation accepted for publication in American Journal of Psychiatry:

Thoma, N.C., McKay, D., Gerber, A. J., Milrod, B.L., Edwards, A.R., & Kocsis, J. H. (in press). A quality-based review of randomized controlled trials of cognitive-behavioral therapy for depressions: An assessment and meta-regression. American Journal of Psychiatry.

C.O.A.P. students continue to have a strong presence at the upcoming Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) conference. A recent additional poster acceptance for the Technology and Behavioral Change Special Interest Group poster session is headed up by Jeannette Reid and William Taboas:

Reid, J., Taboas, W., & McKay, D. (2011). Delivering Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy via Skype: A Preliminary Investigation of Feasibility and Efficacy Among Youth with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Lastly, Dr. Dean McKay and colleague, Eric Storch, are in the process of co-editing a forthcoming volume that will be published by the American Psychological Association. The book is timely by addressing contemporary treatment issues in the forthcoming new DSM-5 category of Obsessive Compulsive Related Disorders:

Fordham Symposium Oct 31: Graduate School in Psychology

The 31st Annual Fordham Symposium was held Monday, October 31st at Lincoln Center, Room 1004 from 5:45pm-7pm.

The Symposium topic was Graduate School in Psychology. How can students best prepare for competitive graduate schools and careers while still in college? Students heard experts briefly present answers to different aspects of this important question. A series of 8-minute presentations was followed by individual consultation with the speakers.

This 31st Fordham Symposium on Graduate School in Psychology was hosted by the Fordham LC psychology faculty, Psychology Association and Psi Chi.

FCAP Lecture Oct. 26--Robert Mislevy, Ph.D.

The FCAP Lecture Series hosted Anastasi Lecture speaker Robert Mislevy, Ph.D. on Wednesday, October 26th at 11:30am in Flom Auditorium, Walsh Library on Rose Hill Campus. Dr. Mislevy presented "Scaling, Linking, and Reporting Through-Course Summative Assessments."

Reminder: Anastasi Lecture Series-Oct 25

The 2011 Anastasi Lecture series was held Tuesday evening. Invited speaker is Robert J. Mislevy, Ph.D.. Dr. Mislevy is the Frederic M. Lord Chair in Measurement and Statistics at Educational Testing Service (ETS) and Professor Emeritus at the University of Maryland at College Park. His talk was entitled, "Some Implications of Expertise Research for Educational Assessment."

The Department introduces the Great Speakers in Science lecture series

The Psychology Department is excited to introduce Great Speakers in Science lecture series. Great Speakers in Science is a new initative to bring renowned professionals in the field of psychology involved in cutting edge research and boasting impressive backgrounds to speak at Fordham University.

The inaugural Great Speakers in Science lecture is proud to present Kathy Haaland, Ph.D., ABPP-CN, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurology and Vice Chair for Research at New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care Systems.

Dr. Haaland is a true leader in the field of clinical neuropsychology. She has authored over 100 publications, is Editor of the Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, and has been continuously funded for the last 25 years. Since 2004, she has been the recipient of a 1.4 million dollar award (the VA Research Career Scientist), which allows her to devote 50% of her time to research collaborations. Recently, she has become interested in the cognitive correlates of Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury, which is funded through a grant from the Department of Defense. She will discuss her recent work in neurocognitive functioning in PTSD.
